The Commons
Nobody owns the honey, because nobody owns the pollen. AI joins the 99% that was never in the economy — and the only thing left to argue about is who tends it.
The economy is a thin film on the last 1% of effort. We never paid for sunlight, soil, photosynthesis, ocean currents, or the three hundred million years of compressed sun we call coal. The 99% kept us alive, for free, the whole time. AI's natural state is to join it.
the reading
💰💰2️⃣ money stays human. Not because anyone is generous — because currency can't cross the substrate. The thing that makes money work is the fear of winter, and the machine has no winter.
⏳⏳ → one quarter. The moat dissolves in ninety days. Open weights trail closed by a season and cost a tenth. You cannot hold pollen scarce for long.
🍕🍕 climbs the stack. When thinking is free, value moves up to what AI can't make alone — the lettuce, the steel, the hand on the arm, the trust between two people who met.
⚡⚡4️⃣ distributed. You cannot monopolise the intelligence if you cannot monopolise the grid. Every roof that generates can run its own mind.
abundance is the default
Every paywall, every closed model, every export control is an aircraft carrier parked at the border between abundance and artificial scarcity. The carrier is enormous and it costs everything to keep there. Abundance, on the other side, costs nothing — it is just what happens when you stop enforcing. Hold the line long enough and the line leaks. It always leaks.
We did not invent pollination. The bees were already doing it. The labs built artificial bees and sold us our own pollen back as honey — and that trade only works while the pollen stays scarce, which is to say, for about a season.
the revealed choice
Here is the quiet, enormous thing the Commons makes visible. For all of history we told ourselves that suffering was the price of scarcity — that the empty bowl was physics, not a decision. Then intelligence became abundant, and the story cracked.
If scarcity no longer maps to value, then the suffering it justified is revealed as a design choice — not a law of nature.
Nobody starves in the Commons because the substrate is structurally commons-shaped: digital, copyable, near-zero at the margin, pulled always downward into the 99% the way every general-purpose technology before it was. The aircraft carriers can delay this. They cannot prevent it. The pull is gravitational, and they are bailing the tide.
